The second night of Dancing with the Stars' premiere event kicked off with a group number from the male professional dancers. Tonight the ladies took the floor to strut their stuff and they did not, for the most part, disappoint.
In addition to the injuries already reported in Dancing with the Stars Season 9 Premiere - Night 1, Mya was injured when a glass she was holding shattered causing a deep cut in her hand. She said she would be ready to dance and indeed she was.
This week's competition will eliminate two stars, one male and one female on Wednesday night's elimination round. The judges' scores were determined in the usual ay for the first dance, either a Salsa or Viennese Waltz. The stars were required to compete in a dance relay as well. Those who performed the Viennese Waltz then participated in a Cha Cha Cha relay. Those who performed the Salsa then participated in the Foxtrot relay. Each group was ranked by the judges, earning 4 points for fourth place, 6 points for third, 8 points for second and 10 points for first place.
Recap of Tonight's Performances
Debbie Mazar and Maksim Chmerkovskiy took the brave first steps on the dance floor with their Salsa. The routine was complex for a first week performance and Debbie stuttered her steps a few times. Her face showed that she was thinking too much about the dance and not letting go enough. She showed potential. During her portion of the Foxtrot relay, her hold was good but her energy was out of control making it seem as though she was pushing her partner around.
Melissa Joan Hartand Mark Ballas gave a simple but graceful Viennese Waltz that lacked magic. Melissa's hold was good but her footwork was a bit choppy at times. The Cha Cha Cha relay showed improvement but not enough as she ranked in third place for the relay.
Mya and Dmitry Chaplin were the third couple to dance for the evening. Carrie Ann declared that Mya and Dmitry had set the bar for the evening with a beautiful Viennese Waltz. Bruno called it magnificent artistry. Len however was disappointed by the lack of content and that only 3 bars were danced in the traditional hold. Mya really smoked it in the Cha Cha Cha relay with great hip movement, crisp footwork and a fantastic performance that earned her the top points for the relay.
Kathy Irelandand Tony Dovolani, the fourth pair of the evening attempted a Salsa that was clean but flat. Lacking the necessary hip rotation, the routine came off stiff, flat and lacking fluidity. Kathy did not improve in the Foxtrot where, in spite of her elegance, she barely seemed to movelanding in her the fourth relay position.
Natalie Coughlin and Alec Mazo, the fifth couple to dance danced a Salsa that came off as cautious. Carrie Ann called Natalie a diamond in the rough. There was just not quite enough sex appeal n the choreography for a Salsa. The Foxtrot gave Natalie a chance to shine. She displayed graceful extension and fluidity, earning the second place points for the relay.
Macy GrayandJonathon Roberts should not be on the dance floor. This star clearly does not want to be in this competition. Every sneak peek, rehearsal clip and camera shot of the women clearly shows that she is putting in the minimal effort and her performance demonstrates that completely. Throughout the Viennese Waltz, her head bobbed and rolled around while in hold - a definite no-no that the judges kindly never mentioned. They went out of their way to find pleasant things to say while giving the lowest score for the female stars. Comments following her Cha Cha Cha suggested she needed to find more time in her schedule to practice. Deservedly, she was awarded the fourth place points for the relay segment.
Joanna Krupaand Derek Hough brought a sizzling Salsa to the Dancing with the Stars dance floor. Hot, sexy and executed with confidence, Joanna was a "wow." Her Foxtrot was just as fabulous. Elegant and smooth, she was awarded the top points for the relay.
Kelly Osbourne and Louis Van Amstel were the surprise couple of the night. First in a Viennese Waltz that was fluid and graceful, Kelly left the judges and audiences dazzled. Bruno couldn't believe his eye. Carrie Ann had chills up and down her spine and Len proclaimed it the best Viennese Waltz of the night. The finest moment was just after Kelly and Louis finished their dance. Kelly broke away from Louie and skittered across the stage to hug and kiss her father, Ozzy, sitting in the front row while beside him, her mother, Sharon wiped tears of pride and joy from her eyes. She returned for a first class Cha Cha Cha that showed unbelievable leg work for so early in the season. Kelly took second place for the relay and may be this season's unexpected dancing phenomenon.
Tomorrow night, two stars will be eliminated from Season 9 of Dancing with the Stars. An exhibition dance from the cast of Broadway's Lion King and a tribute to Patrick Swayze will round out the evening.
